Title: "Pae-Chia: The Additional Money"
Artist Statement: As a teacher with the artist soul I express myself through my art. I create my art in many ways and all of those are always containing words or quotes to make it catch the audiences easily and directly.
Project Description: In Thailand we have a Chinese phrase that we used it as itself without any translated word in Thai that’s mean additional money, which can add it to many places to make you achieved your purpose easier. It’s seems like something corrupted but we trying to sugar coating it as another explanations to make it right. This design I use the Chinese word “白食” in the Teochew dialect (pronounce Pae- Chia, bêh-ziah ) and the Thai script of this word “แป๊ะเจี๊ยะ”. Thai people using the word Pae- Chia to describe the money that you pay to achieved your purpose aside of the money that you have to pay, or in English they described it as the additional money. Thai people spending Pae-Chia in many situtions, so they’ll jave the idea of Pae-Chia on their own way. In this design, I aimed to express this meaning in Thai education. To get into a big name school sometimes you need to give Pae-Chia to schools, but that’s not a good word! So they use the phrase “เงินบริจาค” which mean “Donation Money” instead. So I crossed out the word “แป๊ะเจี๊ยะ” be sarcastic, because no matter how we call it “แป๊ะเจี๊ยะ” or “เงินบริจาค”, they’re still Pae-Chia.
Significance and Context: Due to this project, which aimed to “Social issues" that each individual thinks about” I wanted to express the educational issues in Thailand. Not only the quality or standard of the education but “how to get in there?” issue is a big topic to the inexperienced parents. Nowadays our kids are way more having tough life than before, since they were in kindergarten. Yes, you may wondering how the kindergarten kids having a tough life? Those kids need to be in a good primary school, which they need to take some admission test to get in there. That’s sounds crazy to me when the society forced that young kids (4-6 years old depending on how the family needs them to be) to be in some big name schools. They’re some delusions about the big names as usual, big name for bigger opportunities! Which technically they’re too young to feel that. The issues that I wanted to speak out is not only how they forced those kids to pass the test by provide some tutoring sessions that make them study more than they need due to the age and their abilities but also how some big name schools recruit the Primary 1 (1st Grade) are also questionable. Most of the big names are both private and public schools, they’re require something like “Donation” with the expecting minimum numbers. The fun part of this “Donation” is, they need you to get the cashier’s check with the amount of numbers that you want to “Donate” and insert this to the application form before the kids taking a test. The question is, if the big name schools require the kids to take a test after the entire of tough overtime tutoring, why they need the “Donation” with a huge numbers of money if it doesn’t matter? And why don’t they just require some money directly instead of let the toddlers sacrificed their childhood time to the unwanted tutoring for the no point of admission test to get into the 1st grade?
